Shahid Rajaee exemplary for other Iranian ports

The strategic port of Shahid Rajaee is one of 71 active ports and also the largest port in Iran that has been a hub for transit of exported and imported commodities for around three decades.

Shahid Rajaee port is located at the entrance of the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz. Features such as enjoying modern equipment, being connected to international railway network, and investment are among the reasons that turned this port into one of the most successful ports in the West Asia region.

The port has been operating despite the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic and the United States' cruel economic sanctions on Iran. The administration of former President Hassan Rouhani could establish a dock and add up 31 hectares to the port, which translates into breaking the illegal sanctions on Iran's maritime and trade.

Mohammad Rastad, the CEO of the Ports and Maritime Organization, said two month ago that the inauguration of the significant port project happened when the country was facing the hardest embargo and the outbreak of coronavirus.

The shipping fleet of Iran seeks to use large ships, so the country needs docks and ports appropriate for this purpose, he said, adding that three docks for tankers have been inaugurated at Shahid Rajaee Port to facilitate oil export.

Equipment of oil docks adds up 26 million tons to the capacity of the port annually, noted Mohammad-Reza Allahyar, the deputy head of engineering department of the Ports and Maritime Organization.

Mohammad Karajiran, the manager of Shahid Rajaee port free zone, said that the inauguration of these three ports will provide supertankers of 100,000 tons to anchor at the docks, adding that the facility provides the country with annual export of 34 million tons of oil products, including gasoline, naphtha, gas condensate, mazut, and fuel for ships.

The 13th administration in Iran attached great importance to the development of ports and maritime capacities. Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development Hossein Mirshafi called for proper usage of maritime capabilities in order to increase export.

Mirshafi also noted that the experience of developing Shahid Rajaee Port should be used as an exemplary work in conducting other maritime projects.
